Buddy Gormley's Beowulf Question #1

The Anglo-Saxons desired fame more than riches, because they felt that fame would give their names or their legacies immortality. Do you think that people still feel this way today? Explain.

The anglo-saxon definately thought that fame was very important. Beowulf was more concerned with his title/reputation in being a great warrior/legend and that would be remembered forever. Today there are many famous people but there are a lot of people who are famous for being rich. I think that today people with wealth (who earned it) are very well respected.I think people today are more concerned with getting the "big job" and making a lot of money.

During that time period, Beowulf was well respected because of his heroic actions toward Grendel and Grendel's mother. The fact that the story is true or not is insignificant, but because the story of Beowulf is still around today proves that fame was more important than money in those times. Today, though, I think that people are more concerned with money than fame. Getting a high paying job, buying designer clothes, a big house and expensive cars seems to be more important to people these days than fame.

Fame was of the utmost importance to the anglo-saxons. Getting back to what colleen said, riches will bring you fame. However, I do believe that fame in today's society has a slight edge in popularity among the citizens. As Americans, we crave attention, it is a necessity in American culture. Everyone around has to know hat you got a 100 on the science test that everyones else falied, everyone around you must know the fact that you met Tom Hanks at the book store yesterday.Riches is a big desire in today's society, but fame is what most people strive for.

The Anglo-Saxon did care more about fame than they cared about riches. Today its seems that people care more about the riches, and the more money a person has, the more important they think they are. Most people do not do things for fame now, but instead care more about the reward they will recieve for doing that deed.

It is very clear that the Anglo-Saxons desired fame more so than being rich. They cared more about gaining immortality and being rich wasn't of importance to them. I don't believe that people today still feel that way because most of the people who are famous came from wealthy families, so it's as if they just became famous due to their already existent wealth. Plus, many people would rather have a high paying occupation rather than just being well known. Basically, I find that in today's day and age, we want the complete opposite from what the Anglo-Saxon's wanted.

In today's society, riches is more important to people than fame. People have come to realize that fame does not necessarily bring happiness. Therefore, the next thing people strive for is wealth. People in our society are so materialistic that all they care about is haveing better things than everyone else. The only way to do this is to make money, therefore people care more about $$ than fame.
