Beowulf Test Question - Mrs. Hitschler's Answer

I'm A Cult Hero by The Cure (Written by Robert Smith and released December of 1979)

I'm a cult hero
A dream come true
You want to touch me
But you can't get through
I walk on water and i don't get wet
I've got something you won't forget
I'm a cult hero -- payed my dues
I'm a cult hero -- got nothing to lose
I'm a cult hero
I'm a cult hero I'm ahead of my time
You'll never rule me'coz i'm all mine
Bounce off of me'coz i'm so strong
My time is coming and it won't be long
Save us!!

I chose "I'm a Cult Hero" by The Cure because I consider Beowulf a cult hero. His story has been told for over 1,000 years and he is the iconic figure of Anglo-Saxon literature. The line "A dream come true" strikes me as a line Hrothgar would have used to describe Beowulf after Beowulf showed up voluntarily to take care of a problem that had been plaguing his village for 12 long years. Beowulf "payed his dues" by fighting Grendel and his mother and had "nothing to lose" when he fought the dragon because he had led a full life. "I've got something you won't forget" is a line that might as well have been written for Beowulf. Because of the Anglo-Saxon ideal of fame as immortality, Beowulf's fame will keep him immortal

Eye of the tiger- By Survivor

Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

Chorus:
It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds 'til we take to the street
For we kill with the skill to survive

chorus

Risin' up, straight to the top
Have the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

chorus

The eye of the tiger (repeats out)...

I choose this song because it reminded me of Beowulf, this song alone is a song of a warrior, and it shows how they are ready to take on anything that comes their way, just like Beowulf was ready to do the same.
