The scene opens to the outside of the castle, at about midnight. Fransisco is happy to see Bernardo because he is frightened of the ghost and the military actions that have been going on, thus he is nervous alone. The ghost looks like Hamlet Sr. decked out for battle, it walks around and says nothing. King Hamlet had beaten Fortinbras and taken some of his lands. Fortinbras Jr. has been rallying troops to reclaim his father's lost lands.
Scene II
Claudius is Hamlet's brother, Gertrude is Hamlet's wife. He is asking Fortinbras Sr. to stop his nephew's invasion preparations. Laertes is Claudius's chief adviser's son, he wants to go back to France for fun. Hamlet is grieving for his dead father. They treat it as a passing thing. He wants to celebrate his marriage to Gertrude. Horatio is Hamlet's best friend, he tells Hamlet about the ghost.
Scene III, IV
He tells her not to become to serious with Hamlet, whose love he thinks may just be passing. He tells him some generic fatherly advice, and then to be true to thine ownself. He tells her not to see Hamlet again. He feels that some people are naturally positioned towards drinking, and that it takes even the ---best of people, though the treatment of people afflicted may not be fair. It is a fearful phenomenon, and possibly an evil one, plus it is his father. The ghost does not want Horatio to hear him and Hamlet.
Scene V
That he was murdered by his brother, who also seduced his wife. He wants Hamlet to do nothing to Gertrude, and leave to heaven and her self. To not tell or hint at anything that had happened that night. Horatio is loyal enough to listen to tell Hamlet of the ghost, let him alone with the ghost, and swear to silence. Horatio is more "best friend" loyal, then King and servant loyal. - Eric Kenny
