1. King Hamlet was married to Queen Gertrude, and Claudius is King Hamlet’s brother. King Hamlet and Queen Gertrude were married for such a long time (and since a young age) that Claudius is technically considered to be Gertrude’s brother. This is why Hamlet refers to Claudius and Gertrude’s wedding as “incestuous”.
2. The letter tells the ailing King of Norway, Young Fortinbras’ uncle, of his nephew’s plans to retake his father’s lands from King Claudius.
3. Laertes is the son of Polonius, who is the councilor to the new King (Claudius). He wants to leave because he only came to witness the coronation of his father’s new patron, as was his duty. He now no longer feels the need to be in Denmark any longer.
4. Hamlet is grieving because it hasn’t been more than a month since his father’s death and his father’s own brother has married his mother, and taken hi thrown. Everyone is merry and wearing bright clothing when they should be wearing black. Not only that, but Gertrude doesn’t appear to mourn King Hamlet’s death at all, when they were supposed to have been very deeply in love. Both she and Claudius treat Hamlet like a spoiled child, telling him that everyone suffers loss, and holding on to his grief so stubbornly, refusing to be happy for them, was not very befitting.
5. To celebrate his and Gertrude’s wedding, and his coronation as the new king.
6. Horatio is Hamlet’s truest friend, confidant, and a fellow student at Wittenberg University. He comes, with Marcellus and Bernardo, to tell him of their encounter with his father’s ghost during the night. He tells him that it would be possible for Hamlet to see his father(’s ghost) that night around the same time if he stands guard with them.
