Erin McMahon's Beowulf Question #1

Within the epic poem, Beowulf, the character Beowulf successfully kills both Grendel and Grendel’s Mother. After returning from his horrific excursions, he is rewarded extensively for his actions. Yet, he claims his intentions were never for the copious amounts of gifts nor for the recognition. Do you believe that this is one of the reasons why many people revered Beowulf; due to his selfless actions and the ability to put others before him?

I believe people revered Beowulf not because of his selflessness but because they knew what he had done. They respected the fact that he could do what so many before him could not, Kill Grendel and his mother.

I agree with Amica that Grendel was revered because people knew what he did. Also, I think they saw qualities in him that they wished they possessed as well. Many people would like to think that they would commint acts as couragous as the ones Beowulf did however under pressure there is no telling how a person may act.
